Tokyo, Japan

Visitors can enjoy everything from ancient imperial Japan to the remarkable modern bustle of this sprawling city, part of the world’s largest megalopolis.

Insider’s tip: Foodies will delight in a visit to the Tsukiji Market, the world’s largest fish market. It’s only for early risers though, opening at 3 a.m., with most activity slowing by 8 a.m. and many shops wrapping up by 11 a.m.

Fun things to do:

  • Inside the Imperial Palace grounds are the residence of the Emperor, facilities where various functions are held, and the East Imperial Garden, which is a beautiful garden open to the public.
  • The Tokyo Central Railway Station is a magnificent red-brick building dating from 1914. The building was inspired by the Amsterdam Central Station. There are lots of shops, restaurants and cafés.
  • Meiji Shrine is a 175-acre forest that is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his wife. Visitors enjoy it as a spiritual home and as a recreation/relaxation area in the center of Tokyo.

Our favorite restaurant: The Michelin-starred RyuGin serves exquisite Japanese cuisine in the Roppongi neighborhood. Make reservations well in advance.
