Stockholm, Sweden
This city of many islands offers old-world European charm as well as chic Scandinavian modernity.
Insider’s tip: Nothing is finer than swimming at Fjäderholmarna when the weather permits. The area includes bather-friendly rocks on Stockholm’s closest skerry, just 25 minutes by boat from Slussen or Nybroplan. If the weather’s cold, it’s still worth a visit to find unique shops, restaurants and venues.
Fun things to do:
-
Junibacken is a house full of mischief, mirth and magic. The story train offers a fantastic journey through Pippi Longstocking author Astrid Lindgren’s world.
-
Skansen is an open-air museum with historical buildings, living history, animals, handicraft, and traditions.
-
Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde is a unique collection of Scandinavian paintings and sculptures from the 1900s.
- Travel from wreck to state-of-the-art by visting Vasamuseet. The famous warship Vasa sank shortly after launching in 1628, and was salvaged in 1961. The museum offers fascinating tours and films.
Our favorite restaurant: The Grand Hôtel Verandan provides a view of the water, Old Town and The Royal Palace. On the veranda, you can enjoy a classic Swedish smörgåsbord.
