Warsaw, Poland

Though severely damaged in World War II, Warsaw’s historic Old Town was faithfully reconstructed. The capital has enjoyed a strong revival, bolstered by Poland’s entry into the European Union in 2004.

Insider’s tip: The New Town (Nowe Miasto) is often overlooked. Just north of the Old Town along the left bank of the Vistula River, it’s a district for strolling around in peace and quiet. It offers some good and inexpensive restaurants, pubs and numerous masterpieces of old architecture (churches, palaces and tenement houses).

Fun things to do:

  • The Royal Łazienki Park & Ujazdowskich Palace was established in the 17th century by count Stanislaw Lubomirski. In the 18th century, it was acquired by Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last King of Poland, and became his summer residence. Now it is a museum.
  • The Warsaw Rising Museum is dedicated to the roughly 20,000 insurgents who perished in 1944 while fighting to expel Germany from the city. The museum documents Poland’s experience in World War II and provides a glimpse into the life of the insurgency.
  • The National Museum has more than 780,000 works by artists from Poland and around the world.

Our favorite restaurant: Pub Lolek has great music and dancing in an exceptional atmosphere. We highly recommend its limited but inexpensive menu of Polish food, all at reasonable prices.
